How to fix a gummy smile
An excessively gummy grin is defined as one in which the gum line is visible above the teeth, and it can be a source of embarrassment or insecurity for many people who have it. Gummy grins, also known as an excessive gingival show, can be caused by various oral health problems, including difficulty with your jaw growth, an improper bite, and a hyperactive or too short upper lip.
Treatments
1. Gingivectomy
In cases when enlarged gums are the root of the problem, a gingivectomy may be the most effective treatment option. A 'gum lift' is a type of periodontal surgery known as a 'gum lift procedure. A gingivectomy can be finished in as little as one visit with your dentist or periodontist when performed in the dental chair. The process may entail laser technology to restructure and remove extra gum tissue. These procedures will effectively decrease the height of your gums and help you achieve greater symmetry in your gum line and display more of your tooth to improve the appearance of your smile.
2. Lip Repositioning
To achieve gummy smile reduction, it is necessary to make two incisions at the gumline behind the lip. To achieve this result, the surgeon removes a small strip of gum tissue and sutures the remaining gum tissue into a lower position. As a result, when the person smiles, the lip will not rise as far as it would normally in a complete smile.
- Orthodontic treatment
Orthodontic treatment may alleviate a mild case of gummy smile produced by the teeth or the jaws. This treatment will shift your bite into the proper position and make your gums less visible. Traditional braces and Invisalign are two examples of orthodontic treatments routinely used to repair mild cases of a gummy smile.
- Crown lengthening
Excess gum tissue and underlying bone are removed and reshaped during this operation, allowing your teeth to be seen down their length. The procedure takes approximately an hour and does not normally require additional postoperative treatment.
5. Jaw surgery
Orthognathic surgery, also known as bone shortening surgery, may be performed by a qualified orthodontist and oral surgeon in certain circumstances where the jaw is considered too big (typically with more than 7mm of gum exposed). This procedure entails surgically shifting the entire jaw upwards to get the desired result.
Aftercare
Depending on the operation you have to fix your gummy smile, it may or may not be required for you to adhere to the aftercare instructions provided. In the case of more invasive operations, such as gum contouring or orthognathic surgery, you may be required to maintain a liquid diet for a few days after the procedure, then transition to a soft food diet and gradually reintroduce solid foods as the healing process progresses. If you cannot return the next day, you will be able to return to school or your job. If you follow the aftercare instructions and maintain good dental hygiene, you will be able to enjoy your bright, new, and balanced smile for many years to come!
